Sermon Note Questions for Small Groups
UPDATE: Sermon Audio Sermon Video
OK, here we go. Another season of small group questions based on sermon notes. The team today includes Chris Mathieu, Kelli Templeton, Bob Bonner, and Dave Stone.
Here are some thoughts behind the questions. Our aim is to give you, as a small group leader, insight into how these questions can best be used in your group.
Relate Questions
We hope you were able to attend the tailgate party. Talk about the highlights. Keep the conversation positive. Also, there’s a question to prompt people to talk about their Bible reading. It’s always good to talk about Bible reading.
Review Questions
Bob really wanted to ask this question: What do you think Pastor Dave meant when he used the word “saved” in his sermon? The goal was to get people talking about the sermon and to raise the distinction between justification and sanctification. In the end, we decided to go with Pastor Dave’s wording.
Dig Question
The “Trinity” is a difficult concept for us to grasp. There is nothing else in our world that is like the Trinity–many smart people have tried for many years to devise an analogy–like a triangle, or water. Ultimately, those analogies break down. So, from where does this idea of Trinity (one God in three persons) come? The word “trinity” or “triune” is not used in Scripture.
Lead your group through Scripture to show the following:
- God is one – there is only one God (Deuteronomy 6:4).
- God uses a plural pronoun to describe Himself (Genesis 1:26).
- Matthew 3:16-17 shows all three persons at one time at Jesus’ baptism.
- The Son is God (1 John 5:20).
- The Holy Spirit is God (Acts 5:3-4).
Our aim is to help small group members:
- know God as He reveals Himself in the Bible, and
- understand the Trinity is the ultimate model for relationships within the church and marriages.
In conclusion, we will never fully understand the Trinity. But we do know Scripture shows these three things:
- God is one in essence.
- God exists in three persons.
- There is equality of persons.

Will the notes for the current Sunday’s sermon be posted for those of us who have Sunday night grow groups? This is last weeks!

Hi Kim,
From now on, the sermon notes for groups that meet on Sunday will be posted here. Sorry they weren’t there yesterday. With the Leadership Launch on Saturday, the task of posting the questions was overlooked. Our normal schedule is to post the notes Friday before the Sunday of the sermon.
Grace & peace,
–Dave Stone
